The Philippine National Sport

Sepak Takraw

Rattan ball and metal washer

Sipa (in English "to kick") is the Philippine National Sport. Sipa was traditionally played using a washer. A washer is like a coin with a hole at the center where tails made of threads are attached. The washer is then kicked (sipa) by the player as many times as he can without it falling to the ground. Once it falls, the turn will be passed to the opponent.

Sipa is closely related to the famous game Sepak Takraw which is commonly played in Malaysia. Sepak takraw uses a ball made of Rattan which is also kicked using the different body parts. The goal is the same with SIPA; hit the ball, let it remain in the air using different body parts as long as possible.

Nowadays, Sipa is less commonly played than Sepak takraw by Filipinos.

The Philippine National Flag

The Philippine National Flag is divided into two equal bands of blue and red, and with a white equilateral triangle at its left base. In the center of the triangle is a golden sun with eight primary rays, representing the first eight provinces of the Philippines including Manila, Bulacan, Cavite, Pampanga, Nueva Ecija, Bataan, Laguna and Bantangas. At each vertex of the triangle is a five-pointed golden yellow star that represent the three main islands of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. This flag can indicate a state of war if it is displayed with the red side on top and blue if the country is at peace.

LUPANG HINIRANG (The Philippine National Anthem)

LUPANG HINIRANG

Bayang magiliw
Perlas ng silanganan
Alab ng puso
Sa dibdib mo'y buhay

Lupang hinirang
