The Philippine National Sport

Sepak Takraw

Rattan ball and metal washer

Sipa (in English "to kick") is the Philippine National Sport. Sipa was traditionally played using a washer. A washer is like a coin with a hole at the center where tails made of threads are attached. The washer is then kicked (sipa) by the player as many times as he can without it falling to the ground. Once it falls, the turn will be passed to the opponent.

Sipa is closely related to the famous game Sepak Takraw which is commonly played in Malaysia. Sepak takraw uses a ball made of Rattan which is also kicked using the different body parts. The goal is the same with SIPA; hit the ball, let it remain in the air using different body parts as long as possible.

Nowadays, Sipa is less commonly played than Sepak takraw by Filipinos.
